New DP Surfboards logo

Here's a preview of the first boards with the new DP logo I have been working on. We have tested a variety of colour combinations and printed a limited run. We'll make a couple of adjustments to colours and sizing then start using them for new board orders.

Design Ensemble

"

You’re riding a high, you just put together a design that you couldn’t be more proud of. You’ve fulfilled all of the client’s goals—goals they didn’t even know they had (bonus!) and are also feeling confident of the integrity of the piece at hand. You’ve labored over the kerning, the alignment, the proportion, the balance, the slight variations of colors… you’re on top of the world and no one can stop you. At least in your head—and that’s all that matters.

Flash forward a month later. You’re struggling to come up with new ideas, fresh thinking, sound logic. You see awesome work being posted on Dribbble and FFFFound. Everywhere you look, you’re wishing you had made this, that, and the other thing. You’re wondering if you’re even cut out for the world that is design. Hell—why the world can’t see aesthetics, logic, and experience the way you do. You wonder if it is all pointless. Your parents wanted you to be an engineer and you let them down for that fancy-pants art school. You envy the mundane: the mindlessness of it all. Screw it—you’ll be happier flipping burgers. Maybe you’ll come up with a fancy way to swirl the ketchup and mustard into the restaurant’s logo.

Repeat.

Welcome to the life of a creative.

Design is a Drug

Well said. Couldn't agree more.

AutoStitch Panoramas

I just got back from a trip to Indonesia. Before I left, I purchased the AutoStitch iPhone app to take some panorama photos with. While the application is not always perfect, it definitely produces some great results in a very quick time. Below are some of my favourites from the trip. Each of these panoramas have been produced from somewhere between 8 and 16 separate iPhone photos.

Restaurants and looking busy

My partner will not consider eating at a restaurant that is empty. I did not realize this until she told me directly when we were looking for a restaurant for lunch. I have since observed that this is the case for many other diners also, particularly tourists.

My family - a group of 8 persons - were first to walk in and sit down in a warung in Indonesia. Within 30 minutes the warung was full. It seems that anybody walking past thinks "This place must have great food/service/etc because it is full/close to full.

This got me thinking. If you are a restaurant owner and want to appeal to tourists, why not invite your staff to turn up to work early and feed them so that passers-by see that the restaurant has diners already and quite certainly increase your business?

Skeletal birthday wish

Thought I'd take an artistic hand-on approach to a birthday card for a friend. Bought a floral patterned card and covered the original flowers with laser-printed skulls. The finished result looks much better than the original.

Possibly the best handwriting I have ever seen

Upon recent purchase of a slice of the Great Australian Dream, the previous owner had left this beautiful, handwritten note. First thought was that this was a typed note, printed in an old fashioned, handwriting font. Upon closer inspection, it was discovered that this perfectly aligned wonder was produced by a human hand. This piece of treasure is definitely something to hold onto. Click to enlarge and see the note in all of its glory, although this scan does not do it justice. You don't see handwriting like this these days.

Garage painting

A great way to liven up any garage - paint a crazy character on the wall! This character, giving the Aussie "thumbs up" was appropriately finished on Australia Day 2010. A video camera was set up on stop motion to capture the process. Jaruhd does not claim to be any kind of video expert, and somehow missed recording some footage near the start of the process, but the video will give you an insight into the aerosol art process.
